Why Your Tights Wrinkle at the Ankles (and How to Fix It)

You put your tights on carefully. They look smooth at the thighs and knees. Then you look down and notice small wrinkles and folds gathering around the ankles.

This is one of the clearest signs that the tights are not sitting correctly on the leg. And it has very little to do with the brand or denier.

The real reason ankle wrinkles happen

Tights wrinkle at the ankles when there is too much loose fabric on the lower leg. This happens when the tights are either slightly too big or the fabric has not been distributed evenly while dressing.

The excess fabric travels downward and gathers at the narrowest point of the leg.

Why this happens even in the “correct” size

Most people pull tights straight up in one motion. This leaves extra fabric at the bottom that never gets smoothed out properly.

The correct way to put tights on

  1. Gather the tights gently from waistband to toes.
  2. Put your foot in and pull the fabric only to the ankle.
  3. Smooth the fabric over the ankle and calf first.
  4. Then move to the knee, then the thigh.
  5. Only at the end pull the waistband up.

This ensures even tension across the entire leg.

Signs the tights are slightly too large

  • Wrinkles form quickly after walking
  • Fabric feels loose at the ankle and calf
  • You see folds when standing still

Signs the tights are properly fitted

  • Smooth surface from ankle to thigh
  • No folds when standing or walking
  • Even appearance with no loose areas

Denier effect on ankle wrinkles

Higher denier tights (30+) hide wrinkles better. Sheer tights (10–20 den) show them clearly, which is why this problem is more noticeable with sheer hosiery.

The quick ankle check before leaving home

After putting tights on, look at your ankles in the mirror. If you see folds already, smooth the fabric upward before dressing fully.
